7 Powerful Ahadith on Kindness in Islam Every Muslim Should Know

Kindness is more than just a good deed in Islam; it is a means to draw closer to Allah SWT. In a world filled with stress and division, the teachings of Islam remind us that kindness represents strength, not weakness.

One of the most beautiful aspects of our religion is how often kindness is mentioned in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and particularly in numerous Ahadith about kindness in Islam. These narrations from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provide both motivation and practical advice on how to be gentle, forgiving, and caring in our everyday lives.

Ahadith on Kindness in Islam: The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a perfect example of kindness. He was gentle with kids, merciful to animals, forgiving toward enemies, and generous to those who needed help.

Here are some strong examples of Ahadith on kindness in Islam.

1. Kindness is a Reflection of Faith

A’isha, the wife of Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ), reported Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) as saying:

Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty and it is not withdrawn from anything but it makes it defective. – [Sahih Muslim 2594a]

This hadith teaches us that being kind improves everything — be it a word, an action, or a relationship.

2. Mercy Leads to Mercy from Allah

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

He who shows no mercy to the people, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, does not show mercy to him.” – [Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim]

Children need to be taught from an early age that kindness is not only for people we like, but should be shown to everyone, including animals and those in need. This hadith teaches that showing mercy to others is directly connected to receiving mercy from Allah SWT.

3. Even a Smile is Charity

Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allah said :

Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity. – [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1956, Hasan]

One of the easiest yet powerful ways to spread positivity is to smile. Small acts of kindness, such as a smile or a kind word, carry great reward in Islam.

4. Kindness Towards Children

Anas b. Malik reported:

I have never seen anyone more kind to one’s family than Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).

Our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) showed love openly and encouraged mercy towards children.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) kissed Al-Hasan bin `Ali while Al-Aqra’ bin H`Abis at-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, “I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them,” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) cast a look at him and said, “Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully.” – [Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) carried children even during prayer.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would pray while carrying Umamah bint Zaynab. When he bowed, he would put her down, and when he stood up, he would carry her again. – [Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]

5. Kindness to Animals is Rewarded

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “While a dog was going round a well and was about to die of thirst, an Israeli prostitute saw it and took off her shoe and watered it. So Allah forgave her because of that good deed.” – [Sahih al-Bukhari 3467]

This hadith clearly shows that even showing kindness to animals can be a means to attain Allah’s forgiveness.

6. Speak Kindly or Remain Silent

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest generously and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should speak what is good or keep silent.” – [Sahih al-Bukhari 6136]

7. Allah SWT Rewards Every Act of Kindness

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Administering of justice between two men is also a Sadaqa. And assisting a man to ride upon his beast, or helping him load his luggage upon it, is a Sadaqa; and a good word is a Sadaqa; and every step that you take towards prayer is a Sadaqa, and removing of harmful things from the pathway is a Sadaqa. – [Sahih Muslim 1009]

Kindness is not limited to financial charity. Even small, everyday acts such as helping someone carry something, giving good advice, or removing harm from a path are counted as charity in the sight of Allah SWT. We can take a few minutes every day to perform such acts.
