An Overview of the Sacred State of Ihram

Every pilgrim must observe Ihram before arriving at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. It is the basic requirement of the pilgrimage, and everyone is obligated to fulfil it. This sacred state not only symbolises purity but also devotion to the Almighty and humility. To enter this state, you must wear specific clothes as taught to Muslims by the beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), along with some behavioural guidelines.

The purpose of this state is to strip away all the worldly distinctions and distractions before you stand in front of the Almighty. It also fosters a sense of unity among the Muslim Ummah as everyone stands before the Almighty in the same state, wearing the same attire.

Clothing

Ihram clothing is particular, and every pilgrim must wear it. For men, Ihram consists of two pieces of plain, unstitched white clothing. One of the clothes must be wrapped around the upper body with the right shoulder uncovered, while the other half is wrapped around the lower body. Women don’t have any specified Ihram clothing. They can wear their regular clothes, but they must remain modest.

Mindset

In addition to the clothing, you must also purify your mindset for the Ihram. You must avoid all harmful actions, arguments, and other worldly distractions that cause you to forget your primary purpose for being at the sacred sites.

The state of Ihram comes with certain restrictions. You cannot wear fragrances, kill any animals, cut your nails, or engage in marital relations in this state. All the limits are discussed below.
