Dua in Arabic Text
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً
A Hadith regarding this Dua can be seen in the book Sunan Ibn Majah 925.
It was narrated from Umm Salamah that when the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the Subh (morning prayer), while he said the Salam, he would say: ‘Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds).’
Now let’s see the meaning of this Dua part-by-part.
1. Ilman Naafi’an
Upon recitation of this Dua, we’re asking Allah (SWT) to increase us in the knowledge that will benefit us. The knowledge which doesn’t just benefit us in this world, but also hereafter. Good knowledge is not less than a fortune. But once we are blessed with knowledge, it shouldn’t be kept within ourselves.
This means…knowledge must be shared with the people around us. No matter how little your knowledge is, just share it! Take the benefit of Facebook, WhatsApp, blog articles, or anywhere on the internet for spreading your knowledge. You can even share good thoughts with family, friends, or neighbors. Remember, spreading knowledge is Sadaqah Jariyah!
Rabbi Zidni Ilma is another short Dua for asking Allah (SWT) to increase us in knowledge.
2. Wa Rizqan Tayyiban
We shall ask Allah (SWT) for provisions that are tayyib (good & pure). Islam highly encourages earning 100% halal income & eating halal food at all times. The Dua, worship, and deeds will not be accepted whose income is haram or who consumes haram.
Thus, it is advisable to always ask Allah (SWT) for halal rizq, which brings goodness to us and our family.
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
O people, Allah is Good and He, therefore, accepts only that which is good. And Allah commanded the believers as He commanded the Messengers by saying: “O Messengers, eat of the good things, and do good deeds; verily I am aware of what you do” – Sahih Muslim 1015
See full Hadith here.
A believer must always seek halal rizq and stay away from earning or consuming haram. Keep reciting this Dua on a regular basis for good provisions.
3. Wa ‘Amalan Mutaqabbalan
In this Dua, we ask Allah (SWT) for deeds that will be accepted. We perform prayers, spend time with family, spread Islamic awareness, help people, give charity, feed animals, show mercy to mankind to gain good deeds. But we do not know whether these actions are accepted by Allah (SWT) or not…
We do not know which of our deeds gets accepted or rejected, isn’t it?
Well, the most important thing to remember is whatever we do, our intention must be pure and nothing should be done for the sake of ourselves.
Thus, it is advisable to make this Dua with good intention so that our deeds are accepted.
Tip: While you’ve been making Dua for acceptable deeds, if you see someone coming to you for some help, then do not ignore it. This could be an opportunity given by Allah (SWT) for you to earn rewards. No matter how small it is, just help! If it’s a big help then guide that person instead of ignoring him completely.
Allahumma inni as’aluka ilman naafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan is a short and extremely powerful Dua that will benefit in this world, and hereafter. If you haven’t memorized it yet, then do it right now!
