1. Fasting is a Shield (From Hellfire)

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1894

Just like a shield protects a warrior, fasting protects us from sins and bad deeds. When we fast, we must try our best to control our tongue and avoid all evil actions. We must focus on doing more good deeds and getting closer to Allah SWT. Verily, Allah SWT will greatly reward good deeds done in Ramadan.

2. The Gates of Jannah Open in Ramadan

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1899

Ramadan is a special month when Allah SWT makes it easier for us to do plenty of good things. Since Shaitaan is locked up during this month, we should try our best to offer Salah, ask for forgiveness, help others in need even if it’s a small help, spend quality time with family, avoid bad things, and perform plenty of good deeds which will bring us closer to Jannah, In Sha Allah.

3. Suhoor is a Blessed Meal

Suhoor is not just a food, it is a source of blessing and energy. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encouraged us to eat it because there is barakah in taking a meal at that time.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1923

Many people wake up late and won’t have enough time to eat, some don’t feel as hungry as they do dinner lately, and some feel too lazy to wake up. The suhoor can be kept simple and healthy as well. Dates, eggs, fruits, whole grains, vegetables, milk, etc can also be taken that doesn’t need much time either.

4. The Reward of Fasting is With Allah (SWT)

Fasting is one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam. Imagine you did something good that your teacher or parents say, I will give you a secret surprise later! You don’t know what the surprise will be, but you trust it will be something amazing, right? This is exactly what happens with fasting—only Allah knows the great reward, and it will be something beyond our imagination!

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. – Sahih Muslim 1151e

5. Whoever Fasted in Ramadan With Faith Will be Forgiven

Did you know that fasting in Ramadan can erase all your past sins?

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven. – Sahih al-Bukhari 38

We must fast sincerely in Ramadan with true faith and believe that Allah SWT will reward us. It is not just about avoiding food and water; we must have faith and believe in Allah’s promise. So our niyyah should always be to please Allah SWT and seek His reward.

6. Ramadan Teaches Self Control

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1903

Ramadan is the month to purify our hearts, have patience, seek forgiveness, and get closer to Allah SWT. It is an amazing opportunity to control our desires, avoid bad habits, and become better Muslims. If someone makes you angry while fasting, you can simply say, I am fasting, and just walk away. In Sha Allah, you will be rewarded for being patient and avoiding all evil actions.

Moreover, when we avoid bad habits, stay calm, and develop patience, we get habituated to good manners and stay disciplined. This not only helps us stay strong during Ramadan but in the rest of the months as well.

7. The Dua of The Person Who is Fasting is Accepted

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

When the fasting person breaks his fast, his supplication is not turned back. – Sunan Ibn Majah 1753 (Grade: Hasan)

Ramadan is the best time to ask Allah SWT for forgiveness of our sins, to seek His mercy, and to make Dua for success in our lives. Just before the Iftar, take a moment and make plenty of Dua.

Let’s explore a Hadith below.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

There are three whose supplications are not turned back: A just ruler, and a fasting person until he breaks his fast. And, the supplication of one who has been wronged is raised by Allah up to the clouds on the Day of Resurrection. – Sunan Ibn Majah 1752 (Grade: Hasan)

One of the most rewarding acts in this blessed month is sharing Iftar with others. Imagine if you help someone by giving them food at Iftar, and you get the same reward for fasting. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encouraged us to feed those who are fasting, and in return, Allah gives us immense rewards.

Some easy ways to share iftar are giving dates & water to someone at school, inviting neighbors or friends for iftar, sending food to a poor family, and helping in the mosque by providing iftar meals. This indeed, is one of the best hadith on Ramadan for kids.

9. Laylatul Qadr is Better Than Thousand Months

Laylatul Qadr, known as the Night of Power, is the most special night that falls in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. Allah SWT mentions this night in the Surah Qadr, calling it better than a thousand months.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1901

So what should you do on Laylatul Qadr? Pray extra Salah, recite the Qur’an as much as you can, make lots & lots of Dua for everyone, give charity, increase good deeds, and recite Allahumma Innaka Afuwwun Dua as much as you can.

Let’s explore a popular Hadith on this Dua:

Aishah narrated: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication if I come upon Laylatul-Qadr?” He said:

Say: ‘Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me).’ – Sunan Ibn Majah 3850

10. The Special Gate of Jannah For Fasting People

Jannah has many doors, but did you know there is a special gate in Jannah only for those who fast sincerely for Allah SWT? Let’s see what our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said about this special gate:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1896

On the Day of Judgment, Allah SWT will call the people who fasted sincerely, and they will enter Jannah first through this beautiful gate.
