Why Send Durood Upon the Prophet ﷺ?
Before we get to the short durood shariff in English, let’s understand why this matters.
Allah Himself says in the Quran:
“Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace.” (Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 56)
When Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ), who are we to stay silent?
The Prophet (ﷺ) also promised:
“Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him.” (Sahih Muslim 408)
Ten rewards for just one salawat. That’s a deal you don’t want to miss.

Short Durood Sharif in English with Meaning
1. The Shortest Durood
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ
Transliteration: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad
Translation: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad
This is the simplest and shortest durood sharif. You can say it while walking, cooking, driving, or lying in bed. Each time, Allah sends ten blessings back to you.
2. The Durood Taught to the Companions
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Transliteration: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ali Muhammad
Translation: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad
Source: Sahih Bukhari 6357 – This is part of the longer Durood the Prophet (ﷺ) taught his companions to recite in tashahhud, Durood Ibrahim, which is the most authentic Durood.
Including the family of the Prophet (ﷺ) in your salawat brings even more blessings. The Prophet (ﷺ) loved his family, and Allah loves it when we love what His Messenger loves.
3. The Durood of Peace
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَسَلِّمْ
Transliteration: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa sallim
Translation: O Allah, send blessings and peace upon Muhammad
Source: Based on the Quranic command in Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 56, to ask both blessings and peace upon the Prophet (ﷺ).
This durood combines both requests Allah commanded – blessings and peace. When you recite this, you’re directly obeying Allah’s instruction in the Quran. SubhanAllah.
The Reward Multiplier
Here’s something amazing. When you send durood upon the Prophet (ﷺ):
- Allah sends ten blessings upon you
- Ten sins are removed from your record
- Ten good deeds are added to your scale
Abdullah bin Mas’ud (RA) narrated that :
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The people closest to me on the Day of Judgment are those who send the most blessings upon me.”
Source: Jami at-Tirmidhi 484, Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)
A Beautiful Dua to Include
After sending durood, ask Allah for whatever you need. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“When any of you prays, let him begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet, then let him ask for whatever he wishes.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1481)
So use these short durood shareef as your key to unlocking answered duas.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Your blessings upon me will reach me wherever you are.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 2042)
So send them often. Send them abundantly. And make your connection to the Prophet (ﷺ) strong through these simple words.
May Allah (SWT) accept our salawat, forgive our sins, bless us, and grant us the companionship of the Prophet (ﷺ) in Jannah. Aameen.
