When Should You Send Durood? Specific Times based on Authentic Ahadith

Discover the authentic times to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ based on Hadith, including on Friday, after Adhan, during Dua, and more.

Let’s be honest for a moment. How many times a day do you hear the name of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)? In the Adhan, in khutbahs, in conversations, in the books we read.

And how many times do we actually send blessings upon him?

Sometimes the words are on the tip of our tongue, but we’re in a hurry. We rush through our prayers, we rush through our day, and we miss out on one of the easiest ways to earn Allah’s mercy.

But here’s something beautiful. The Prophet (ﷺ) didn’t just tell us to send blessings upon him. He taught us exactly when to do it. He gave us specific moments that carry extra reward, extra blessing, extra closeness to Allah.

Read this article till the end. It won’t take much of your time, but Insha’Allah, by the time you finish, you’ll never hear the Prophet’s name the same way again.

What Does Sending Durood (Salawat) Mean?

First, let’s understand what we’re actually saying when we send Durood.

Allah says in the Quran:

“Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O  believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace.” (Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 56)

When Allah sends Salah (blessings) upon the Prophet (ﷺ), it means He is praising him in the highest assembly of angels. When the angels send Salah, it means they are making dua for him. And when we send Salah, it means we are asking Allah to raise his rank and honor him even more.

And the reward? The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever sends salah upon me once, Allah will send salah upon him tenfold.” (Sahih Muslim)

Tenfold. One Durood = ten blessings from Allah directly on YOU. This is not a small thing.

When Should You Send Durood? The Specific Times Mentioned in Hadith

The beautiful thing about sending blessings on the Prophet (ﷺ) is that it’s always good. Any time, any place, any situation – sending Durood is worship. But there are specific moments when the reward is even greater, moments the Prophet (ﷺ) himself highlighted for us.

Let’s go through them one by one.

1. On Friday – The Best Day of the Week

This is the most emphasized time. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The best of your days is Friday, as it is the day when Adam (AS) was created, and the day he died, it is the day when the trumpet will be blown and the day when everyone will swoon away. So send abundant blessings upon me on this day, as your blessings are presented to me.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047)

SubhanAllah. The Prophet (ﷺ) specifically told us to increase our Durood on Friday. Why? Because on this day, our Salawat are presented directly to him.

The scholars mention that sending 100 Durood on Friday is a beautiful practice.

2. In the Morning and Evening (After Fajr and Asr)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Who recites blessings upon me ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening will obtain my intercession on the Day of Resurrection.

At-Tabarani reported this Hadith together with two chains of transmission. One of them is reliable (Jayyid). See Haythami’s Majma’uz-Zawa’id 10/120, and Al-Albani’s Sahihut-Targhib wat-Tarhib 1/273.

Imagine that. Twenty seconds of your day, and you secure the intercession of the Prophet (ﷺ) on the hardest day of your existence.

3. When You Hear the Adhan

This is a moment many of us overlook. The Adhan is playing, we’re rushing to get ready for prayer, and we forget to send Durood.

‘Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.

4. During Dua – Before and After

This is one of the most important etiquettes of making dua. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us that a dua is “veiled” or “suspended” between heaven and earth if it doesn’t include praise of Allah and blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ).

Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) said:

“Indeed, dua is suspended between heaven and earth, and nothing of it ascends until you send blessings upon your Prophet (ﷺ).” (Tirmidhi)

Another hadith states:

`Amr bin Malik Al-Janbi narrated that he heard Fadalah bin `Ubaid saying:

The Prophet (ﷺ) heard a man supplicating in his Salat but he did not send Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ), so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘This one has rushed.’ Then he called him and said to him, or to someone other than him: ‘When one of you performs Salat, then let him begin by expressing gratitude to Allah and praising Him. Then, let him send Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ), then let him supplicate after that, whatever he wishes.

So the proper etiquette is:

  1. Begin with praising Allah
  2. Send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ)
  3. Make your dua

5. When You Hear the Prophet’s Name Mentioned

This is a moment of test. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned us about being stingy at this moment:

“The real miser is he in whose presence I am mentioned and then he fails to send blessings upon me.” (At-Tirmidhi 5/551)

Our tongue should be trained to immediately respond with Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam whenever we hear or say his blessed name.

6. During Times of Difficulty and Hardship

When life gets hard, when problems pile up, if anyone is in difficulty, he must recite countless Durood Shareef.

Reciting excessive Durood Shareef kills hardships.

Why? Because when you send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ), you’re connecting directly to the one whom Allah loves most. And when you love what Allah loves, Allah takes care of your affairs.

7. When You Forget Something

The scholars mention:

“When you forget anything and your memory fails to recollect it, then recite Durood, you will remember the forgotten thing.”

There’s a wisdom here. Forgetfulness often comes from Shaytan or from being distracted. Sending Durood brings barakah and removes Shaytan’s whispers, allowing your mind to clear.

8. In Your Gatherings (Majlis)

The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged us to adorn our gatherings with his remembrance:

“Beautify your gatherings with salaat upon me.” (Reported in Al-Maqasidul-Hasanah)

When people gather and send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ), the angels surround them, and Allah’s mercy descends upon them.

A Final Reminder

The Prophet (ﷺ) loves this Ummah more than a mother loves her child. He prayed for us. He worried about us. He asked Allah to delay his own reward so that we could be saved.

The least we can do is send blessings upon him.

Every time you say “Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam,” know that it reaches him immediately. Angels are assigned specifically to collect our Durood and present it to him.

He hears your salam. He responds to your blessings.

Now, as you know, when to recite Durood Sharif, make Durood your constant companion. On Friday, increase it. In the morning and evening, make it ten times. When you hear his name, don’t let the moment pass. When you make dua, wrap it in Durood. When life gets hard, send Durood. When you forget something, send Durood.

Let your tongue be moist with the remembrance of the one who gave everything for you.

May Allah (SWT) grant us the love of His Prophet (ﷺ) in this world and his companionship in the next. May He make us among those who send abundant blessings upon him. May He accept our Durood and present it to our beloved Messenger. And may He reunite us with him on the Day of Judgment. Aameen, Ya Rabbal Alameen.
