Imagine you open your eyes and the light filters through your window. You’re alive. Your heart is beating. Your soul is back in your body. Another day has been given to you as a gift.
But what’s the first thing that comes out of your mouth?
For many of us, it’s a groan. It’s checking our phones. It’s jumping straight into the stress of the day before even acknowledging the One who gave us this day.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us something different. He taught us that waking up is one of the most sacred moments of our day. It’s a moment of gratitude—a moment to set the tone for everything that follows.
In this article, we will go through an authentic dua to say after waking up in English. Do read the article till the end. It might just transform your mornings from stressful to blessed, Insha’Allah.

3 Authentic Duas After Waking Up in Arabic, Roman English with Meaning
The Sunnah is rich with various supplications and actions for the morning. Let’s go through the dua after waking up from sleep in English with its authentic sources.
Dua 1: The Primary Dua After Waking up From Sleep
Let’s start with the most authentic and essential dua immediately after waking up that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited every single morning.
Translation: All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6324
This short dua carries enormous meaning. You’re acknowledging that your sleep was a form of death, that Allah chose to return your soul, and that one day there will be a final resurrection where you’ll stand before Him. It’s gratitude and remembrance rolled into one beautiful sentence.
Say it the moment you open your eyes and before you check your phone. Before you say anything else. Let these be the first words of your day.
Dua 2: The Comprehensive Morning Supplication
This longer dua was taught by the Prophet (ﷺ) and covers gratitude, praise, and acknowledgment of Allah’s power.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي، وَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي، وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ‘afani fi jasadi, wa radda ‘alayya ruhi, wa adhina li bi dhikrih
Translation: All praise is due to Allah, Who healed me in my body, and returned to me my soul, and permitted me to remember Him
Source: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3401
Notice the three blessings mentioned here: health (your body functioning), life (your soul returned), and the ability to remember Allah (the greatest blessing of all). Some people wake up healthy but don’t remember Allah. Some wake up with their souls returned, but in pain. Count your blessings every morning.
Dua 3: Dua After Waking up From Sleep at Night
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, and wondered what to do with that precious time? The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us that these quiet moments are actually a gift.
Ubadah bin As-Samit, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever wakes up in the night and says, ‘None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs the Dominion, and to Him is the praise, and He has power over all things. And Glory is to Allah, and all the praise is to Allah, and ‘None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, and Allah is the greatest, and there is no might nor power except by Allah (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa `alā kulli shai’in qadīr. Wa subḥān Allah, walḥamdulillāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wa Allāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.)’ – then he said: ‘O my Lord, forgive me (Rabbighfirlī)’ – or he said – ‘then he supplicates, he shall be responded to. So he makes a firm determination, then performs Wudu’, then he performs Salat, his Salat shall be accepted.”
Source: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3414
Imagine you’re lying in bed, the world is silent, and the King of the universe is waiting to respond to your call. And if you follow this by making wudu and praying, your prayer is accepted. SubhanAllah. So next time you wake up at 3 AM and can’t sleep, don’t scroll through your phone. Don’t toss and turn in frustration. This is your moment. Get up, make wudu, and talk to Allah. He’s listening.
Upon Waking From a Bad Dream
If you wake up from a nightmare or a disturbing dream, the Prophet (ﷺ) taught specific actions:
- Spit lightly (without saliva) on your left side three times
- Seek refuge in Allah from Shaitaan and from the evil of what you saw
- Turn over to the other side
- Never tell anyone about the bad dream
Bad dreams are from Shaitaan. Don’t give them power by talking about them or obsessing over them. Just seek refuge in Allah and move on with your day.
Physical Sunnahs Upon Waking
The morning isn’t just about words. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us physical actions as well that complete the morning routine.
1. Wiping the Face
When waking up, the Prophet (ﷺ) would sit up and wipe the sleep from his face with his hands. This is a simple but beautiful Sunnah.
2. Using the Miswak
The Prophet (ﷺ) would use the miswak (tooth stick) immediately upon waking. Aisha (radiAllahu anha) reported that the first thing the Prophet (ﷺ) would do upon entering his house was use the miswak.
Cleaning your mouth first thing in the morning is not just hygiene – it’s worship. The miswak has enormous benefits and is a Sunnah that brings reward.
3. Performing Wudu
Making wudu in the morning, even if you’re not praying immediately, is a blessed act. It refreshes you spiritually and physically.
4. Praying Tahajjud if You Woke Early
If you wake up before Fajr, don’t just lie there. This is the time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks who is seeking forgiveness. Pray even two rakats. You won’t regret it.
5. Praying Fajr on Time
The first real test of your morning is praying Fajr. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah. Imagine starting your day with Allah’s protection over you.

What If You Struggle to Wake Up?
Let’s be honest. Not everyone jumps out of bed with joy. For many of us, waking up is a battle. The blanket feels heavier than usual. The alarm is ignored.
If this is you, here are some practical tips from the Sunnah:
1. Sleep Early
The Prophet (ﷺ) disliked talking after Isha unless necessary. If you sleep late, waking up early becomes nearly impossible. Aim to sleep soon after Isha.
2. Have a Sincere Intention
Before sleeping, make a firm intention to wake up for Fajr. Tell yourself: “I want to stand before Allah and pray. I don’t want to miss this blessing.”
3. Recite the Sleeping Duas
The dua for sleeping includes asking Allah to wake you up. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to say Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya.
4. Use Multiple Alarms
There’s no harm in using alarms. Place your phone or alarm clock away from your bed so you have to physically get up to turn it off.
5. Help from Family
Ask someone to wake you up. The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged mutual help in goodness.
6. Remember the Reward
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that praying Fajr in congregation is better than the entire world and everything in it. Is that worth losing sleep over?
Conclusion: Your Morning Is Your Foundation
Your morning is the foundation of your entire day. If you build it on gratitude and remembrance, the rest of the day will stand firm. If you build it on stress and complaining, everything will feel shaky.
The Prophet (ﷺ) gave us the blueprint. The duas are simple. The actions are easy. The rewards are enormous.
So tomorrow morning, when you open your eyes, don’t reach for your phone; recite the dua after waking up from sleep.
